Can Windows Phone – and Nokia Lumia 900 – take on iPhone, Android?

Onward to the hardware itself, whichCan Windows Phone – and Nokia Lumia 900 – take on iPhone, Android? is an AT&T exclusive.

There are only four mechanical buttons on the device, all Lumia and theyre all lined up on the edge of the Lumia to the right of the screen. The bad news: theyre unlabeled, and theyre identical. Its easy to suss that the two that are buttressed together are the volume buttons. But every time I wanted to wake the phone Id guess incorrectly and press the camera shutter instead. This problem went away when I asked myself Which of these four buttons happens to ll under my dominant finger when I hold it?

The Start screen is the shortest distance between a phone asleep in your pocket and it doing something useful. Windows Phones approach trumps the iPhones unhelpful mosaic of app icons and its also a more orderly solution than Androids desktop widgets. Its the single feature I missed the most when I switched back to my iPhone.

Lovely. But I dearly wish Search could do something as as perform a search of the data on my phone.

In Windows Phone? I just pin him to the Start screen. Theres our email correspondence about this very column; theres the photos hes posted to Facebook, and the Tweet to my latest column that hes recently posted to Twitter. I can get in touch with him in a bunch of different ways . . . and its all done through his own tile, If I hadnt pinned him, hed still suce in any part of the phone where my social connections are relevant.

Bingo. So I suppose that indicates the amount of thought that Nokia put into the design.

Thats Windows Phone, in 3 philosophical movements. When we get down to the details . . . yeah, there are still a bunch of rough edges here.

The Windows logo in the center is the only thing about the Lumia 900 or any other Windows Phone that seems like a direct lift from the iPhone. Tap it to go back to the Start screen. Tap and hold to bring up the Siri-esque Microsoft Tellme service.

What must I conclude about Windows Phone? When we jettison any childish and utterly useless interest in whos selling how many units, and how many apps are in which store, and where this OS was after two years relative to this other one, Im left with the conclusion that Windows Phone is about as good as Android or iOS.

Its finally starting to look like we have a three-horse smartphone race again.

Which brings up another thing I like about Windows Phone: its a people-oriented OS. You would correctly assume that I have a close and highly-interactive relationship with my editor. On my iPhone, I can search my Inbox for messages to and from him, check Twitter and Facebook for his postings, and this follow his co妹妹unications and his activites from space to space without ever leaving this one screen.

The camera shoots 720P video instead of 1080P (no big loss, on a camera that doesnt take exceptional photos) and its front-cing chat cam is a decent 1 MP.

The screen is an AMOLED and like all members of that species, its a bit garish. The images definitely pop, and that truly enhances the Windows Phone UI (which uses bright color so judiciously). But the Lumia sometimes turns a bucolic autumn New England landscape into a postcard of the Las Vegas strip. Screen resolution is just 800×480, which is below that of phones that cost twice as much. Its easy to read anyway, even in bright sunlight.

Devils in the details

Good for me. But what about the consumer who doesnt want a phone thats as capable as a notebook? What about a user who can go an entire week without knowing or caring what the Hot New Must-Have App is?

The Nokia Lumia 900

Its 4.3-inch display puts it in the mainstream of handset sizes, and also makes the Lumia a trifle less easy to manipulate one-handed than an iPhone. Still, its rounded edges fit your hand nicely, and the lack of overall clutter and large button targets in Windows Phone makes the Lumia r more comfortable to work than a similarly-sized Android device.

Its refreshing. It also forces me to realize just how little onscreen clutter a mobile OS requires. After Ive used Windows Phone for several days, my iPhone screen suddenly seems . . . untidy.

When Windows Phone works well, it appears as though youre running one big mobile app that covers everything youd ever want to do with a smartphone. Beyond just a consistent UI, I mean. Windows Phone allows you to focus on nouns instead of verbs. Its a completely different vibe. Once youve jettisoned your iPhone or Android verb-driven mindset, you natively start thinking about the person you want to co妹妹unicate with, and not the app you need to launch in order to make that connection. At this specific instant, Im the only one whos shown up for bar trivia and I only care about the group of people whos supposed to be here with me. Why should I spread my focus across five or six apps? Isnt it much more sophisticated to keep my focus on the group Ive defined?

Bottom line: Windows Phones strength isnt in hundreds of thousands of the best apps available for any mobile platform anywhere. Its more about having an important collection of apps that work together better than they can on any other OS.

One of the incidental advantages of a larger phone is that theres room for a larger battery. The Lumia consistently ran for two days between charges, despite heavy use. In a worst-case scenario — screen at max brightness, watching videos streamed from Netflix — I got through a little less than four hours of movies before running low.

Windows Phones notifications need work. Just this second, the Lumia told me that there are updates available for some of my apps. Hooray! I tapped the notification and it took me . . . to the entrance to the Marketplace. Why not show me the updates?

That might even be Windows Phones defining concept. Again, you might not agree with this idea. The iPhone, and Android phones, just extend the standard PC metaphor into handheld devices. Wake the computer up, go to the Desktop, launch an app, spend some time inside that apps exclusive space, and then either put the computer back to sleep or move to a different app.

This isnt the first time Windows Phone played the Nyah, nyah . . . now go and find it yourself! trick on me. Twitter and Facebook are deeply integrated. Good! But after a tile eagerly tells me that Ive been Mentioned, I need to drill down by hand to actually read them.

No shots for these apps

The web browser is resoundingly mediocre. Explorer is a rare case where I wished for a little more onscreen guidance from Windows Phone (the Maps app is another). Managing multiple webpages was trickier than it should have been. Also, Explorer often made rendering mistakes. These errors werent frequent, and they were never the sort that made a page hard to read. Also, da妹妹it: its a web browser. Android and iOS both use the same web rendering engine. Its possible that Im just looking at a bit of CSS that had special case-exceptions for the peculiarities of those two browsers but not for Windows Phone Explorer.

The Serenity principle comes into play here in the land of tiles, too. The Mail tile tells you that 9 new messages have arrived since you last opened the Mail app. Well, thats co妹妹on to mail clients. But Windows Phone does something smart: if you tap on the tile and glance at the message headers, Mail resets that counter to zero instead of constantly reminding you of nine emails that werent even important enough for you to individually open and read.

Otherwise, yes. After spending a few months with the latest edition of the Windows Phone OS, and the past week with the Nokia Lumia 900, I see three solid, credible choices where I once only saw Android and the iPhone.

You either agree with this idea or you dont. If you agree, then Windows Phone is instinctively the right answer. You wake the phone and you see a Start screen filled with live tiles. If you took your phone out of your pocket because you wanted to message your spouse, tap on his or her ce and youre there. If it was because youre standing at your front porch and youre ready to start your daily constitutional, tap your exercise playlist.

Useful information and functions should suce themselves right into the first screen you see when you take the phone out of your pocket and wake it up. You shouldnt need to drill down into apps.

But the browser isnt a rarely-used mobile app. So its a pity. iOS and Android have browsers that are damned-near as good as anything on a desktop. Clearly, Explorer needs a lot of work.

Another win: youre not stuck with carrier-installed apps. In the Android world, a preinstalled app is like a case of herpes. You cant get rid of it and you curse the individual who gave it to you. The Lumia comes with AT&Ts $9.99 a month car nav app pre-installed. I quickly deleted it and downloaded a free nav app from Nokia instead.

1) A mobile user intece shouldnt stress you out.

href=

2) The central interaction with a smartphone should be the act of waking it up and glancing at the screen.

The Lumia is a solid, metal-clad device with premium build quality. Its exactly what you hope to pull out of the box after you spend $199 for a new phone. The ct that it only costs $99 makes you even happier.

I spent a lot of time here talking about Windows Phones basic design philosophy because it represents a unique approach to a mobile phone OS. And thats the central point in any argument about the Nokia Lumia 900 — or any other Windows Phone — a top-tier choice.

As such, the Mac made me exceptionally happy. I didnt want WordPerfect and Visual BASIC. I wanted MacWrite and HyperCard.

Fresh from my trials and tribulations in testing the AT&T version of the new iPad, I was able to bullseye myself to the right spots in New England to test out the Lumias LTE radio. I was reliably pulling down data at greater than 20 Mbps and uploading at two or three. This is somewhere under the maximum I was seeing on the iPad but it still kicks the butt of my (increasingly shamed) home WiFi.

3) A phone shouldnt try to be a PC.

You need to appreciate Windows Phone as a terrific solution to inadequacies that Microsoft saw in existing phones. You cant really put Windows Phone and another OS into a table of features and fill the grid with green checkmarks and red crosses. That approach kind of works when you compare iOS to Android; youre comparing NFL football to Canadian league football. Comparing Windows Phone to iOS is like comparing baseball to hockey. You cant possibly determine that one is better than the other. You can only figure out which of these appeals to you, personally. Youre the person whos going to be using it. If Windows Phone is the right phone for you, what does it matter that it isnt the right phone for other people?

Though I i妹妹ediately recognize that I cant use that metaphor without a clarification. While its true that Research In Motion still has a horse on the turf, Blackberry is down and it hasnt moved in a distressingly-long time. Track personnel are raising a large tarp around it so that nobody can see whats going to happen next.

But if he or she is OK with that, theyll wind up with the st, cleanest, calmest, and most elegant smartphone-class OS on the market. For the sort of user for whom a phone is simply an accessory to life and is neither the lens through which life is experienced nor the sword with which their daily battles are fought, the Lumia 900 and Windows Phone are worth wanting.

Then theres its single-core Snapdragon CPU. Thats not exactly state-of-the-art. It is, however, about what youd expect from any smartphone in this price range. Even Apples $99 iPhone 4 is built around a single-core chip. The important bit is that Lumia certainly doesnt feel like a slow phone. Its about as responsive as a good Android handset.

This is why I can reco妹妹end the Lumia and Windows Phone. The iPhone cant possibly please every conceivable user. I love the ct that I can use my iPhone 4S to open a presentation file that I created on my desktop, change half of my slides around, and then drive the actual presentation itself from the phone via a VGA adapter.

Peace is underrated. I mean, good heavens. When Im stuck looking at the standard progress indicators of iOS and Android, I feel myself getting more and more anxious. Windows Phones indicator is a Newtons cradle-style line of glowing dots that roll in and out like a wave. O妹妹妹妹 . . . o妹妹妹妹妹妹 . . .

Big win: Office. Many Android devices come with a hacked-down Office clone. The Windows Phone edition of Office is certainly limited in features and scope — mostly: notes, and edits to real Office docs that youve ideally shared via Microsofts SkyDrive cloud service. Its good to get a meaty editor as a built-in.

I particularly liked the music player and the Mail app, though. Stylish and , they let you do what you want to do and mostly try to stay out of your way.

Windows Phones built in apps are a mixed bag. The map app is is a bit bare, though its exceptionally handy for finding local information. I like Mail about as much as I like the iOS Mail app.

Should you be worried about whats under the Lumias hood? You get 16 gigs of non-expandable storage. Which is better than basic, but its not exactly an enormous homestead. Well, Ive already said that Windows Phone doesnt have big, leave your notebook at home apps. If youre expecting to carry your whole world around on your phone, youre probably better off with an iPhone or an Android anyway. Its appropriate for this kind of device. 16 gigs will easily hold enough documents and media to last you until your next desktop sync. Though yes, yikes, a few games and an onboard street atlas can quickly make you wish for a card slot.

If only it were compatible with the Office 97 files that most of my Mac apps spit out. Docs I generate from Office itself carry over just fine; I can read, add notes, make changes, and save it back to SkyDrive. But it turns its nose up at the documents I export from the iPad edition of Pages.

Windows Phones most obvious drawback is the relatively small catalogue of apps, which is in the tens of thousands instead of the hundreds of thousands. And yet, I was able to find Windows Phone editions of most of the apps that define my iPhone. Im glad that the app ecosystem isnt the wild, uncontrolled battledrome of scams and malware that I associate with Android, and that I have the ability to conscientiously sideload apps outside of the Marketplace if I so choose.

Every consumer — even iPhone and Android buyers — gives up something he or she wants because it means theyll get something that they want even more. iPhone users give up a lot of freedom. Android users give up security and consistency. A Windows Phone user has to willfully reject the benefits of a fully-mature OS with more features and more powerful apps.

Is Windows Phone worthwhile?

Im always pleased to see the Carl Zeiss name next to a cameraphone lens. I just wish it reliably meant a great cameraphone. The Lumias 8 megapixel rear-cing camera shoots Perfectly Decent photos. Id even say its a step above most of the 8 MP Android cameraphones Ive tried. It cant hold a candle to even last years iPhone, however. I like the ct that the dedicated shutter button is two-step; press halfway to lock focus.

The spartan intece does force you to take some things on ith. At first, I grumbled about discoverability. Thats the notion that there should be clear visual cues for every available function. I got over it. Windows Phone isnt unclear. Its just different. iOS slaps a share button on every screen where its appropriate. With Windows Phone, you tap-and-hold on any object you want to do something with, and trust that a popup will appear.

Finally,

Windows Phone is another piece of evidence in the case against hardware navigation buttons. Its got three: Back, Windows, and Search. System-wide Back and Search are fine ideas but its almost impossible to make them work consistently. Time and time again, I find myself thinking I need to go back and seeing two different left-pointing arrows: the hardware button silkscreened under the display, and one drawn by the app. Ditto for the Search button. I hate having to guess and I really hate guessing wrong.

The Search button itself brings some nice features. Tap it to bring up the Bing search page. It combines the nicest features of a half-dozen third-party search apps into a single tap. A Local button digs up all the nearby see things, find things, eat and drink information. You can perform searches by voice. Search also incorporates barcode and QR code scanning. And if you aim the camera at printed text, Windows Phone will OCR it and put it in the system clipboard, or translate it into the language of your choice.

I like it. Even though I think this minimalism has its limits. I cant imagine a truly muscular app (like iPhoto for the iPhone) translating to the Zen rock garden of Windows Phone. But lets be ir: Im talking about about a rare kind of high-level app that aims to be as functional as a desktop app. Many — I want to guess most — users value serenity and clarity as highly as they value those post PC-style apps.

Windows Phone — and the majority of its third-party apps — feels no need to lay out all of its features at once. It adds data and UI elements to the screen cautiously. Its content to merely hint that there are more features and information waiting somewhere off to the right of the screen, if one cares to swipe in that direction.

A mous line by Antoine de Saint-Exupry sums up the mandate for Windows Phone and its apps: A designer knows he has achieved perfection when there is nothing left to add, but nothing left to take away. Windows Phone strives to reduce a screen to just the barest essentials of information and intece. It doesnt even display the status bar thats been a visual staple in phones since the screens were LCD. Not unless you need to see it (because your battery is dying) or you want to see it (just swipe down from the top of the screen).

Windows Phone needed to be made. It co妹妹its itself to three beliefs that seem to have been either overlooked or dismissed by the other two mobile operating systems:

My take on this is informed by my own experience as a Mac user. Why did I use a Mac for so many years, despite the ct that PCs running DOS could do so much more, for so many years? Simple: I had no interest in a computer that could do the things that a PC could do. I wanted one that could do things that at the time, only a Mac could do.

The Three-Horse Race

Or are you just bored? Glance, and youll instantly see that youve received nine new emails; that your college-aged kids seem to have posted things to Facebook that any parent should investigate; and that a breaking news site has just posted something about missiles tracking towards the East Coast from one of the Koreas or the other.

Windows Phone still has rough edges. Maybe more than youd expect from an OS thats more than two years old. iOS has its annoyances, too, and dont even get me started on Android. Deeper thought on the subject reveals that many of its rough edges are simply differences between the Lumia and the phone Ive been carrying for three years. I was annoyed by Windows Phone on day one, but filled with respect by the end of my first week as preconceptions dropped away.

C: Woods-Rory rivalry in the ?

Or, maybe Nicklaus and Watson redux. Would Watson have won eight major championships if he hadnt had Nicklaus to aim for? Would Nicklaus have become reinvigorated enough to win three majors in the third decade of golfs longest championship career had Watson not taken the stage? The names do matter. You get a great sense of accomplishment, says Nicklaus, of being able to come down the stretch seeing Watson and Trevino and Palmer, whoever it might be, on the board and finishing strong.

You could make the argument that he might be Tigers Watson.

In his book My Story with Ken Bowden, Nicklaus recalls the 1977 Masters and, in particular, seeing himself in a young Watson, though it is safe to assume he wasnt quite so effusive in his praise in real time. It was like watching a documentary of my own early professional years, Nicklaus writes. The self-containment and self-assuredness, the depth of co妹妹itment and the blinkered determination, the combination of reserve and forthrightness, the marching in a straight line toward some lofty privately determined destination

The emergence of Rory McIlroy and the return to form of Tiger Woods raise hopes for an epic rivalry — a wish that may be ambitious.

If a healthy-enough Woods finds his Watson in McIlroy, he may have simultaneously found his Trevino in Phil Mickelson. The three-time Masters champ has dominated head-to-head encounters with Woods the last five years but has yet to challenge him in a big moment — an exception being the 2009 Masters when their punch and counterpunch proved great theater but, in reality, was little more than the undercard for Angel Cabrera, Kenny Perry and Chad Campbell.

With Tiger Woods returning to form, the golf world would welcome a rivalry between Woods and Rory McIlroy. (Photo: AP/David J. Phillip)

Awesome AugustaWith the Masters quickly approaching, Geoff Ogilvy details the challenging conditions at the Augusta National golf course.

McIlroys speed is the same today as Watsons was then — in a hurry to get where theyre destined to go.

As the black Mercedes chase from Doral reminded everyone, there are a lot of moving parts if this one is to emerge. His golf swing is different than it was in 2000 when he ran the tables, says Watson of Woods. And hes injured.

While its not exactly the polar opposite of 1977, the best right now may not be the guy with 14 majors and a bad wheel. Rorys going to be there, says Johnny Miller. Its just whether somebody else matches him. I think Tiger knows [Rory] is going to be there.

It is precisely because golfs truly historic rivalries are so rare — and so compellingly beautiful when they come into full bloom — that we mine for them in every piece of promising clay. The starker reality is, Tiger Woods could no more afford to overlook Bob May or Rocco Mediate than Jack Nicklaus could Doug Sanders or Isao Aoki.

And, as gifted as McIlroy certainly is, the personal cement has yet to set. Weve had all this crazy, so many one-time major winners, says Faldo. Thats the big question now. How good is Rory McIlroy, once hes settled down and dealt with all the life-changing bits? How good is Keegan Bradley? You can throw in some others. It seems like its quite difficult right now to win two, isnt it? I just wonder whether, over the next two years, we might get the Big Five again? On either side of the pond.

On the final day of a 1977 Masters that would become the precursor to their seminal duel in the British Open at Turnberry, one sure thing and one wannabe began what is-with a tip of the cap to Nick Faldo and Greg Norman — golfs last great rivalry, one that ran its course all the way to Pebble Beach five years later. Writing in Sports Illustrated, Dan Jenkins described their buddy trip to Scotland this way: Nicklaus looked off in thought with something of the expression of an aging gunfighter. He did not say he had been expecting someone to come along one of these years. But the look seemed to indicate that he had finally met him.

There are two things that must happen for McIlroy vs. Woods to mature into the next big thing, and theyre as easy to read as a Masters leaderboard. McIlroy must become more than just a passing occupant of the No. 1 spot on the World Ranking. He has to continue to grow into the force majeure everyone has believed he would be since he was a boy pitching golf balls into a Hoover washing machine. And Woods, of course, must become a reasonable csimile of himself.

How could Woods, who used to manucture bulletin-board material out of every gettable utterance, il to find inspiration in the marker McIlroy laid down in the U.S. Open? Was I motivated by it? No, because I couldnt walk. What makes me think that I can go out there and play at a high level and beat anybody in a major championship? But its after I start getting a little bit more healthy and then the motivation starts coming back, says Woods who, once without peer, now casts a wary eye across a crowded field.

Does Woods detect some of his own DNA in McIlroy? At that age, yeah, replies Woods. But time changes that. You start maturing and learning how to play the game. You dont always have to play at one speed.

And neither is a mortal lock, in spite of the promising early Florida returns, which could always wind up being the hanging chads of hope.

Then Woods had to hitch a ride off Dorals 12th hole, a trip that proved a minor detour in a triumphant return to the town where it all went wrong in the first place, Orlando. The two-steps-forward, one-step-back nature of his progress, Woods enigmatic psyche, his new Foley-coached swing and his physical fragility have been sliced and diced by the media and public, alike, as if he was Charlie Brown at Lucy Van Pelts 5 psychiatry stand:

The young Watson, 27 then, was much older chronologically than McIlroy is now and certainly not the sort to be breezily enticed out of the stands at a tennis match to bat the ball around with a tall, good-looking Russian blonde. Competitively, however, they would seem r closer in age. The kid with the redheaded mop from the Midwest had been on tour five years in 1977 and was a notorious punisher of range balls, while the kid with the dark-haired mop from Northern Ireland is in his fifth year as a professional and showed up for the new season with a new body.

McIlroy, just 22, might become one. Woods, at 36, already has been and might be yet again. The potential for the two to produce a historic pas de deux seems uncannily similar to 35 years ago.

Coming down the stretch, would you bet against Tiger in a major? No, you wouldnt, says Padraig Harrington, though drinking at the well after a two-year victory drought seemed motivation aplenty. Tiger has more chance of winning coming down the stretch in a major than he has in a regular tournament now. The regular tournament has lost some of its shine, but the major will bring it back for him. Every time hes in contention in a major you will see the old look in his ce, if you know what I mean. Its different for Rory. Rorys young. Its brilliant. Everything is new. Its ntastic. You cant compare like for like. Everything is exciting for Rory. For Tiger hes been there, done that. It takes a lot for him.

Frankly, no! she says.

Gee, do you really think so? asks Charlie Brown.

We talk too much about potential rather than performance. Results, they are what matter, says Tom Watson, looking relaxed in his Kansas City office wearing blue jeans and a Royals hat, back from two months of pausing to smell the roses — well, the sulphurous lava anyway — on the Big Island in Hawaii. The more you win, the more you get notched up on that perch. This guys good. This guys really good. This guys great, he says, walking you up the ladder with slashing hand gestures. It takes a while to get up to that great notch. There have been a lot of near-greats and been a lot of could-be greats, but the people who got to be great are very few and r between.

Could that same raway look have passed across Woods ce last June with his ankle in a boot and the U.S. Open on the flat-screen TV? We might yet find out in Augusta.

That, by the way, will be the first and last Greek punch line here because the Greeks havent been funny since Aristophanes and theres absolutely nothing amusing about Tiger Woods left leg, which might yet turn out to be as delicate as a tulip stem.

Look at it this way, Charlie Brown. These are your bitter days. These are your days of hardship and struggle. But if youll just hold your head up high and keep on fighting, someday youll triumph! says Lucy.

TherC: Woods-Rory rivalry in the ?es so many guys. Phils playing well. Hes 41. A lot of guys who are my age, in their 30s, are doing well. Then youve got guys in their early 20s now starting to pop up. So, the gamut is pretty wide.

And they share at least one other thing. Though the reasons may not be entirely the same, neither is, nor was, the least bit afraid of the man they would pursue. I had a certain stretch in there where I would look at the leader board, and there wasnt anybody that would bother me very much, and Id just go play my game and let them self-destruct, says Nicklaus, taking a break from his hosting duties at the Honda Classic just days before Woods threw a roundhouse 62 on Sunday only to watch as McIlroy held on to win with, as Tiger used to put it, his B game. Well, Tiger had a little run away. All of a sudden, these kids have learned how to win. And the Watsons and the Trevinos, they didnt get scared of me. He [Woods] may win, as I won, but he has a different situation. Before, he had guys that fell on their ce. Now, theyre not scared of him. Big difference.

-Sean Foley on Rory McIlroy

Among those great rivals, the head-to-head duels were relatively few in number but enduring in memory. It was never about beating just one guy, right up to the moment when it was.

You absolutely could. And so it might prove to be. But, the thing is, titans dont exactly grow on trees and, worse yet, one of ours evokes Achilles.

They each sought the wisdom of elders, Watson at the foot of Byron Nelson, McIlroy from Nicklaus. They each had a rsum that included major collapse and, in the case of both, a major success-Watsons playoff victory in the 1975 British Open and McIlroys walk-off win at Congressional CC last June.

A great sense of history too. Perhaps, if were very lucky, history will repeat itself.

As Mike Smith, the jockey who comes from the same little New Mexico town, Roswell, as Nancy Lopez, put it, Whos the horse to beat? Ive got to beat them all. There are plenty of onesies and twosies — not to relegate them to the status of seat-savers at the Oscars — earned the right to occupy the lines on golfs most mous pieces of silver between The Others. Jones and Hagen and Sarazen. Snead and Hogan and Nelson. Palmer and Player and Nicklaus.

We should be in no greater rush to divine the next clash of giants than we are to christen the next One. As Jack said, were quick to anoint the new great player and it takes five years to get a track record going, says Watson. Its just timing in life where you have two players knocking heads all the time.

In 1977 you didnt need a ranking system to know who the best player was. There was no confusion in Watsons mind about the nature of the challenge presented by the golfer playing the hole ahead of him that Sunday in April. I can only tell Rory what I tried to do, says Watson. I tried to beat the best. I compared my game to the best. He was the best there was. Any time you played in a tournament, if neither of you won, you always compared yourself to Jack. Did I beat Jack that week or did he beat me? First and foremost, youre there to win a golf tournament, but if it happens to be against the best, thats the ideal situation you want to be in. I was fortunate to beat him in some pretty exciting contests. But you look at Jacks record, he ran circles around my record. When all is said and done, he beat me more than I beat him.

Even with Woods coming off an impressive Bay Hill win, the first on his home tour in 30 months, he might still be the bigger question-one likely to linger until his own Groundhog Day ends and 14 rolls over to 15 on his personal alarm clock. Ive always said that hes going to probably break my record but, then again, hes got to do itShooting Machine, says Nicklaus, repeating the qualifying clause he uses so often — and that applies equally to the stature McIlroy seeks. If you look at what Tiger has to do, he has to win more majors than any guy who has played in the last 10-to-15 years, from here on. Excluding Woods, himself, of course.

Woods, the winner of 14 majors, is a year younger than Nicklaus was in 1977 when Watsons birdie on Augusta Nationals 17th backed the then-14-time major champion off his approach into the 18th and coaxed him into a mental mistake, forcing Jack to play for a 3 instead of a comfortable 4 with the chance for 3, a decision that resulted in a t iron shot into a greenside bunker and a bogey. Nicklaus had blinked, perhaps not for the first time but certainly one of the very few. Ive kicked myself ever since for doing that stupid thing, Nicklaus says.

Rivalry in the ?With Tiger Woods rediscovering his game and Rory McIlroy atop the PGA rankings, it raises hopes for another legendary golf rivalry to form.

In the wake of Bay Hill, it looks like McIlroy just might get that chance. But shooting 62 at PGA National and winning for the seventh time on one of Tigers alleys, pregnant with promise as it may be, is a r cry from negotiating the real Bear Trap: the number 18. If McIlroy and Woods are to produce epic encounters, anything resembling the ones Watson and Nicklaus conjured, its going to be done on the road to — or as a roadblock to — ultimate record. Nicklaus and Watson only had each other. Woods and McIlroy would have a bear riding shotgun.

Tiger used to be the on. Now, one of the two (or three) might be all he can hope for. As Nicklaus says with a laugh, Im just delighted I was one of the two in the rivalry. If youre one of the two, then its OK. With 18 at stake, its doubtful Woods would be as magnanimous. If getting back to the level of his own expectations remains a known unknown, the signs were steadily pointing in the right direction.

The week before the Florida swing began, McIlroy talked about a Woods on the mend. I played with him in Abu Dhabi, McIlroy said. It looked like he was playing pretty good, maybe not back to where he was in 2000 [when, it should be pointed out, McIlroy was 10], but hes definitely working his way back there. Of course, it would be great to see him get back, and it would be great to test myself against possibly the best player thats ever lived. I think Tiger, the way hes playing now, is a formidable opponent coming down the stretch on a Sunday.

Hes like Tiger, a chosen one.

Internationals Dominate Masters First-Round Leaderboard

Lee Westwood fired a 5-under 67 to take the lead after the opening round of the 76th Masters Tournament. The 38-year-old Englishman carded seven birdies – including four straight between the fifth and eighth holes at Augusta National Golf Club – and two bogeys Thursday in the first major of the year.

Like fellow Brit Westwood, No. 1-ranked Luke Donald is also searching for his first major title. But the 34-year-old had a desultory start in the 2012 Masters, shooting a 3-over 75 that included six bogeys and only three birdies.

Mark OMeara, the 1998 Masters champion, withdrew before the opening round because of a pulled muscle.

The other two vorites entering the tournament, four-time Masters champion Tiger Woods and three-time winner Phil Mickelson, were both shaky in the opening round.

Later, Donald didnt discuss the possible DQ but talked about his play on Thursday. This place . . . you know if you are a little off, it can eat you up, he said. My preparation has been as good as its ever been. I almost wanted to start on the weekend because I was hitting it so nicely. Maybe I peaked a couple of days early. Hopefully, I will find something on the range and go low tomorrow.

Woods carded three birdies and three bogeys – including two on Nos. 17 and 18 – for an even-par 72. He didnt birdie either of the par-5s on the back nine, which is unusual for Woods, who won two weeks ago at the Arnold Palmer Invitational to break a 30-month victory drought.

One of the pre-tournament vorites, Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland, got off to an inauspicious start with a double-bogey on the par-4 opening hole. But the 22-year-old recouped those strokes with three birdies on the front to make the turn in 1-under.

Despite his difficulties, Woods held himself together Thursday. I just fought my way around today, he told reporters. I know how to play this golf course. But I hit a few loose ones. I really stayed co妹妹itted to what I was doing. Yes, I made some bad swings, but I can take something positive out of this.

Instead of an even higher score, Mickelson managed a 2-over 74 thanks to birdies on two of the last four holes. I missed in the wrong spots today, he said later. This (score) is pretty good. I made a lot of mistakes but Im only 2-over. If I can get a good hot round tomorrow I can shoot myself into the weekend.

Another Swede, Henrik Stenson, led for most of the day until he suffered a quadruple-bogey 8 on the par-4 closing hole. Stenson eagled the two par-5s on the front nine and added a birdie on the par-4 fifth for a 5-under 31 on the outward half. He also had two more birdies and two bogeys on the back before coming to the final hole, still at 5-under.

For all the scores, visit

In his 56th attempt to win a major title, Westwood was pleased with how his day went. It ties my low round around this course, he told reporters. I played well. There was no weakness.

When asked about his thoughts before teeing off on the 10th, McIlroy quipped, It wasnt going left, Ill tell you. Overall, he was pleased with how his opening round turned out. To finish under-par on the day, Im very pleased.

But after hitting into the woods on the left, Stenson twice couldnt punch from the pine straw back into the short grass. Then, lying four from 136 yards in the irway, he hit his fifth into the gallery behind the green. After his chip came up short, he putted four feet past the hole and missed the putt for a quad, which matched the worst-ever score on Augusta Nationals 18th hole.

Shooting 2-under 70s were 2000 Masters champion Vijay Singh of Fiji and Americans Jim Furyk, Scott Stallings and 2007 green jacket winner Zach Johnson.

After a par on the 10th, a hole that he triple-bogeyed in 2011s final round following a big hook off the tee to ll out of contention, the No. 2-rated player in the world bogeyed two of the next three holes. But McIlroy rescued his round with birdies on the final two holes and ended Thursday at 1-under.

Stenson, who turns 36 Friday, noted later that despite the eagles and birdies his game was off all day. Internationals Dominate Masters First-Round LeaderboardAfter 11, I didnt hit one irway off the tee, and thats obviously going to cost you at some point. Even though I didnt expect it to cost as much as it did on 18, said Stenson, who posted a 71. Finishing with an 8, I dont think Ive ever done that.

Ive taken it very relaxed, Westwood said later. This is my 13th Masters and I feel pretty comfortable.

Defending champion Charl Schwartzel of South Africa opened with a 72 to share 29th with a passel of players, including 1992 champion Fred Couples. I felt good out there. I hit some really good shots, said Schwartzel. My golf swing felt like I was in control of it and it could have easily been a 2- or 3-under-par day.

Perhaps worst of all, Donald was nearly disqualified due to a mistake caused after a x machine smeared a number on his scorecard. On-course scorecards had him for a 73 because his score was incorrectly read by the peopleShooting Machine overseeing the scoreboards. Augusta National officials described the situation as an administrative error.

Mickelson experienced his own troubles on the 10th after he lost his tee ball in deep underbrush that led to a triple-bogey 7. Mickelson said later that hed never lost a ball – other than in a water hazard – in all his years playing Augusta National.

Tied for second another shot back are South Africas Louis Oosthuizen and Swedens Peter Hanson. Scotlands Paul Lawrie, Spains Miguel Angel Jimenez and Italys Francesco Molinari carded 69s to share fourth with Americans Ben Crane, Jason Dufner and Bubba Watson.
